The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Platform Expansion Project

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai is undergoing an extensive platform extension project to increase capacity and handle longer trains. The project, which costs Rs 62.12 crore, intends to expand platforms 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 to accommodate trains with up to 24 carriages.

Cost and Progress.

As of May 2023, the project's total progress has exceeded 70%, with about 45% of the expansion work at platforms 10 through 14 finished. The project is being carried out in two parts, the first of which focuses on expanding platforms 10 and 11.

Completed Works

• The project has completed several significant works, such as constructing a Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) building (G+3).

• Constructed substation building

• Completed Object Controller Rooms at CSMT and Masjid

• Layed and linked track to connect 2 km of platforms to existing lines.

• Dismantling the Carnac Bunder Road overbridge.

Platform Extension Details

The scope of work includes extending platforms 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 to accommodate trains with up to 24 coaches. The extensions range from 305 to 382 meters for these platforms. Additionally, the project involves:

Removal and relocation of 61 old Overhead Equipment (OHE) masts, 71 signaling and telecommunication obstructions, and nine old dry pit lines and washing pit lines

Dismantling and replacement of 25 turnouts and a 3-track Diamond arrangement with 14 track turnouts

Benefits of the Project:

• Extended platforms can handle trains with up to 24 coaches, avoiding the need to divert to other stations owing to platform limits.

• Improved train movement along the congested CSMT-Dadar route.

• Improved station capacity and efficiency to accommodate over 11 lakh people per day.

• Streamlined and responsive Mumbai railway network.

Reasons for Cancellation of Mumbai Pune trains

The CSMT platform is being expanded to handle 24-coach trains, increasing the terminal's operating efficiency and capacity. The Central Railways has planned special blocks to assist pre-Non-Interlocking (NI) work, resulting in the cancellation of some trains during this time.

Impact on Travelers

The cancelation of these trains may create a major inconvenience for Yatrikar's traveling between Mumbai and Pune. Travelers are urged to make alternate arrangements and remain up to date on the latest developments in the platform extension project.

Conclusion

The Central Railways Mumbai Division's decision to suspend multiple Mumbai-Pune trains from May 28 to June 2 is a vital step toward completing platform extension work at CSMT. While this change would increase the terminal's capacity and efficiency, it will also create difficulty for passengers during this time. Passengers must be aware of the most recent changes and arrange their trips appropriately.
