Western Railway Announces 35-Day Mega Block for 6th Line Work Between Goregaon and Kandivali
In a significant move to enhance the railway infrastructure in Mumbai, the Western Railway (WR) is set to commence work on the 6th line between Goregaon and Kandivali. This project, which spans approximately 4.5 Kilometers, is scheduled to begin during the night of August 27/28, 2024, and is expected to be completed by October 5/6, 2024. The initiative aims to improve the capacity and efficiency of suburban train services in one of the busiest rail corridors in the city.
Project Details
The construction of the 6th line is part of a broader effort by the Western Railway to alleviate congestion and enhance the overall commuting experience for passengers. According to Shri Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the work will be executed over a period of 35 days, primarily during weekends to minimize disruption to daily commuters. The project will involve five major blocks, each lasting 10 hours, scheduled exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays. Notably, there will be no work conducted from September 11 to 17, 2024, in observance of the Ganpati Festival, ensuring that the festive spirit is not hampered by construction activities.
Mega Block Schedule and Impact on Services
To facilitate the construction, Western Railway has planned several mega blocks during which train services will be affected. The schedule is as follows:
- First Mega Block:
- Date: August 31 - September 1, 2024
- Duration: 10 hours
- Impact: Approximately 150 suburban cancellations, 60 short-terminations, and delays of 50-60 minutes.
- Second Mega Block:
- Date: September 7–8, 2024
- Duration: 10 hours
- Impact: Similar to the first block with approximately 150 suburban cancellations and delays.
- Third Mega Block:
- Date: September 21 - 22, 2024
- Duration: 10 hours
- Impact: Increased disruptions with 180 suburban cancellations and delays.
- Fourth Mega Block:
- Date: September 28 - 29, 2024
- Duration: 10 hours
- Impact: Up to 200 suburban cancellations and extended delays.
- Fifth Mega Block:
- Date: October 5 - 6, 2024
- Duration: 10 hours
- Impact: 100 suburban cancellations and delays of 60-70 minutes.
During these mega blocks, approximately 20-22 long-distance trains will also experience delays of 15-20 minutes. Additionally, from September 28-29, non-interlocking work will be carried out on the 5th line between Goregaon and Kandivali, causing further delays for trains originating from Bandra Terminus.
Significance of the 6th Line
The addition of the 6th line between Goregaon and Kandivali is crucial for several reasons:
- Increased Line Capacity: This expansion will significantly enhance the line capacity of the Mumbai suburban section, allowing for more trains to operate efficiently.
- Reduced Congestion: By easing congestion on the existing tracks, the new line will help improve the punctuality of trains, making commutes smoother for passengers.
- Segregation of Train Services: The project will facilitate the segregation of mainline trains from suburban services, allowing for dedicated paths for each, which is essential for maintaining schedules.
- Enhanced Connectivity: Once completed, the 6th line will provide additional paths for running more trains, benefiting commuters traveling between Andheri, Borivali, and Virar.
